About Our Name

The name Wool and Madder expresses the foundation of our brand and philosophy. Our rugs are crafted from wool, valued for its durability, warmth, and natural character, and are, for the most part, made using natural dyes. Among these is madder root, one of the oldest known dye plants, used for centuries to produce a range of reds from terracotta to deep rust. Its tones are never flat, or uniform, instead, they carry subtle variation and depth, a natural phenomenon known as abrash, where differences in dye batches, create an organic shift in color. This is a one of the defining beauties of natural dyes and traditional craftsmanship rather than a flaw.
