This hand-knotted Rainbow Stripe Gabbeh rug was woven in Afghanistan using natural dyes and hand-spun Ghazni wool. The simple striped design has bold bands of color with natural color variations, known as abrash.
Traditionally, Gabbehs were practical household textiles rather than rugs created primarily for the commercial market. Their thick pile, substantial wool construction, softness, and warmth made them useful as bedding, floor coverings, and furnishings in tents and seasonal encampments. This practical origin helps explain the loose, spontaneous aesthetic that distinguishes many Gabbeh rugs, with simple geometric forms, open fields, and expressive designs reflecting the individual hand of the weaver.
