Kerman Vase

This hand-knotted wool rug was woven in Andkhuy, a historic weaving center in northern Afghanistan, near the border with Turkmenistan. This region is known for its long tradition of handwoven carpets and workshops that reinterpret classical Persian designs though Afghan weaving techniques.

The design is a contemporary interpretation of antique Kerman Vase carpets of Safavid Persia. Vase carpets were an important group of Persian Carpets produced during the Safavid  period, particularly in the 16th and 17 centuries.
