Yes, we clean both hand-tufted and machine-made rugs. Before cleaning, we inspect each rug to identify its fibers, construction, dyes, backing and overall condition. This allows us to select a cleaning process appropriate for that particular rug.
Hand-tufted rugs are constructed differently from hand-knotted rugs. Their pile is inserted into a foundation material and secured with a layer of latex adhesive, after which a fabric backing is applied. Unfortunately, many hand-tufted rugs are made with lower-quality latex that deteriorates as the rug ages.
A traditional full wash can accelerate the breakdown of weakened latex. This may cause the backing to separate, release powder or develop an unpleasant odor. Because many hand-tufted rugs cannot safely tolerate the amount of water used during a complete wash, we often perform a controlled surface cleaning instead. This limits moisture while safely cleaning and refreshing the pile.
Machine-made rugs may contain wool, nylon, polyester, polypropylene or a combination of fibers. They may also have different backing materials that respond differently to water and cleaning agents. We tailor the cleaning method to the rug’s materials and condition rather than treating every rug the same way.
If a rug has deteriorating latex, weakened backing, unstable dyes or other pre-existing damage, we will explain its condition and any potential risks before cleaning begins.
