Act quickly, but do not rub or scrub the spill. Use a clean, white, absorbent towel to blot the area gently, working from the outside toward the center so the liquid does not spread. Continue blotting with fresh sections of the towel until no more moisture transfers.
If possible, place a clean towel beneath the affected area to absorb liquid that has passed through the rug. Carefully remove any solid material with a spoon rather than pushing it deeper into the pile.
Do not use bleach, laundry detergent, carpet cleaner or any product labeled “Oxy.” Oxygen-based cleaners may remove or alter the rug’s dyes and cause permanent discoloration.
You may rinse the affected area carefully with tepid water, but never use hot or boiling water. Avoid saturating the rug. If the stain disappears completely and the rug’s colors remain stable, a small amount of white distilled vinegar diluted in tepid water may be used as a final rinse. Blot the area thoroughly afterward and allow it to dry completely.
If color transfers to the towel, the stain remains visible or you are uncertain about the rug’s fibers or dyes, stop and contact a professional rug cleaner. Explain what was spilled, what was applied and when the accident occurred. Prompt treatment offers the best chance of preventing permanent damage.
